  • Minnesota sues the Trump administration to stop a surge of federal immigration agents.
  • The lawsuit claims the operation amounts to a constitutional "federal invasion."
  • The surge followed the shooting death of Renee Good, prompting widespread protests.
  • Officials allege violations of First Amendment rights targeting a Democratic-leaning state.
  • Local leaders are demanding a temporary restraining order on the enforcement actions.

Minnesota, alongside its largest cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in an effort to block a significant surge of federal immigration agents in the state. This legal action follows the tragic shooting of Renee Good, a mother of three, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, which has caused uproar and sparked multiple protests across the region. Local officials are referring to the federal deployment as a "federal invasion" that has caused chaos and fear within communities, according to BBC, Los Angeles Times, and Al Jazeera.

The lawsuit was initiated by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who contends that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is infringing upon constitutional rights by deploying more than 2,000 immigration officials in what has been described as the largest enforcement operation in U.S. history. Officials argue the operation has led to excessive use of force and violated the First Amendment by targeting a politically progressive state. “This is, in essence, a federal invasion of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, and it must stop,” Ellison stressed during a press conference, according to Los Angeles Times and Al Jazeera.

The enforcement activities, launched after Good's death on January 7, have prompted considerable public backlash, resulting in numerous protests. Eyewitness accounts reveal that federal agents used tear gas against gathered crowds during confrontations with protesters, raising safety concerns and federal allegations of public safety disregard. “President Trump’s job is to protect the American people and enforce the law,” stated a DHS spokesperson in defense of the operation, as reported by Los Angeles Times, BBC, and Al Jazeera.

Local leaders, including Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have condemned the actions of ICE agents, arguing that these operations have created an atmosphere of fear and mistrust, with reports of local law enforcement responding to instances of apparent kidnappings by immigration agents. As Minnesota’s population of non-citizen immigrants is relatively low, at just 1.5%, officials speculate that these actions are politically motivated, particularly targeting the state’s Democratic base, according to Los Angeles Times, BBC, and Al Jazeera.
