Colombian President Gustavo Petro has raised critical concerns about regional stability ahead of his upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump. He suggested that their discussions could be pivotal in "stopping a world war," emphasizing the need for dialogue amidst growing militarization in South America, particularly following US actions in Venezuela. Petro underscored Colombia's vulnerability without adequate air defense, warning of potential civil unrest and escalating hostility towards the US should aggressive policies be pursued, according to India Times.
In a noteworthy development, Trump reversed his previous threats and announced that Petro would visit the White House in early February, indicating a shift towards diplomacy. Before this, Trump had aimed harsh rhetoric at Petro, but following a phone call between the two leaders, a cooperative approach appeared more likely. Trump noted, “I look forward to having a meeting… I am sure it will work out very well for Colombia, and the USA,” emphasizing the need to combat drug trafficking, according to SCMP and Al Jazeera.
