Jeffrey R. Holland, a high-ranking official in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who was next in line to become the faith's president, died early Saturday morning from complications related to kidney disease, according to CBS News, Los Angeles Times, and NPR.
Holland was the next longest-tenured member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles after President Dallin H. Oaks and was positioned to ascend under the church's established succession plan. Following his passing, Oaks remains as president, with Henry B. Eyring, now next in line for the leadership, according to CBS News, and Los Angeles Times.
Holland's death results in a vacancy in the Quorum that Oaks is expected to fill by calling a new apostle from a lower-tier leadership council. The apostles are all male as per the church's priesthood policies, according to NPR.
