Federal authorities announced the arrests of four alleged members of a far-left extremist group, the Turtle Island Liberation Front, who were suspected of plotting coordinated bombing attacks in Southern California on New Year’s Eve. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the group planned to conduct bombings targeting multiple locations including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and vehicles, highlighting that these individuals posed a serious threat to public safety in Los Angeles and Orange County, according to Reuters and South China Morning Post.
The four suspects—Audrey Illeene Carroll, Zachary Aaron Page, Dante Gaffield, and Tina Lai—were captured while testing explosives in a desert area east of Los Angeles. According to the FBI, they were preparing to implement their plan, which was meticulously documented to target multiple businesses across the region at midnight on New Year's Eve. Bill Essayli, First Assistant U.S. Attorney, noted that the operation included detailed instructions for building improvised explosive devices (IEDs) capable of causing significant harm, reflecting the seriousness of the threat posed, as reported by Channel News Asia and BBC.
Evidence collected during the arrest indicated the suspects brought materials such as PVC pipes, charcoal, suspected potassium nitrate, and fuse materials to their campsite. A surveillance operation had tracked their movements, leading to their apprehension before they could execute their plans. Law enforcement captured footage of the suspects just prior to their arrest, which displayed their preparations for the attacks, according to statements made during a federal news conference and documented in court filings that outlined their conspiracy, confirmed by India Times and SFGate.
Additonally, it was revealed that the group intended to attack logistics centers, described in court documents as "Amazon-type" facilities, with backpack bombs to be detonated simultaneously. The FBI has stated that the successful disruption of these plans should demonstrate the importance of vigilance in monitoring extremist threats and showcases the efficacy of inter-agency collaboration to keep communities safe, as noted by LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and reiterated by India Times and BBC.
