Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Pope Leo XIV in Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and peace efforts. The Vatican reported that during the cordial talks, Pope Leo emphasized the importance of "the continuation of dialogue" to achieve a "just and lasting peace." The discussions also included the sensitive topics of prisoners of war and the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, according to ABC News and Anadolu Agency.
Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the Vatican's ongoing support and humanitarian assistance, stating, "Ukraine deeply appreciates all the support of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV." He informed the Pope about diplomatic efforts with the United States aimed at achieving peace and sought the Vatican's assistance in returning abducted children. Zelenskyy also invited Pope Leo to visit Ukraine, calling it a "powerful signal of support" for the Ukrainian people, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The meeting coincided with Zelenskyy's series of talks with European leaders, where he reaffirmed Ukraine's position against territorial concessions in peace negotiations. The revised U.S. peace plan, which has now reduced from 28 to 20 points, remains contentious, particularly around the issues of territory and security guarantees. Zelenskyy stated, "There are difficult questions about territories. In this regard, there is no compromise for now," emphasizing Ukraine's firm stance amid external pressures from U.S. officials, according to ABC News and Anadolu Agency.
