Honduras's top prosecutor, Johel Antonio Zelaya, announced on Monday the issuance of an international arrest warrant for former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, following his pardon by former US President Donald Trump. Zelaya shared this development on social media, emphasizing that Honduras has been "lacerated by the tentacles of corruption and by the criminal networks that have deeply marked the life of our country." The announcement aligns with the upcoming International Day Against Corruption on December 9, 2025, according to Al Jazeera and Anadolu Agency.
The arrest warrant specifically targets Hernandez, who is implicated in a corruption investigation linked to the Pandora II case, involving alleged fraud and money laundering during his presidency. Zelaya indicated that he has coordinated with international partners, including INTERPOL, to execute this warrant. Hernandez's legal troubles have intensified after Trump pardoned him, alleviating a 45-year prison sentence for drug trafficking and related offenses, as noted by The Hill and Anadolu Agency.
Further complicating the situation, Hernandez's attorney has claimed that the warrant is a politically motivated maneuver by the governing Libre Party, which is currently opposing Hernandez’s National Party in the wake of the recent presidential election. Zelaya, who was appointed by the Libre Party, echoed the need for accountability and justice in light of the corruption engulfing the country, targeting politicians and ex-officials alike for their involvement in diverting state funds. This ongoing political drama unfolds as the electoral process continues to be closely contested, according to Al Jazeera, The Hill, and Anadolu Agency.
