According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 100 people, including 63 children, were killed in horrific airstrikes targeting a kindergarten and the Kalogi Rural Hospital in Sudan’s South Kordofan state on December 4. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus labeled the strikes as "senseless," highlighting that the attack began with hits on the kindergarten and extended to the hospital multiple times as civilians tried to rescue the wounded, leading to significant casualties, which also included 35 injured individuals, according to Reuters, South China Morning Post, and Africanews.
The WHO's monitoring system noted that the Kalogi Rural Hospital was struck at least three times by paramilitary forces using drones. Following the incident, survivors were relocated to Abu Jebaiha Hospital, where urgent appeals for blood donations and medical supplies have been made as healthcare delivery continues to be obstructed, according to South China Morning Post and Africanews.
International reactions have been strong, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressing being “appalled” by the reports of these fatal strikes. The WHO has reiterated calls for a ceasefire, stating that "Sudanese have suffered far too much. Ceasefire now," urging for increased humanitarian access and assistance, as the ongoing conflict has left nearly 12 million displaced in Sudan, according to Reuters, South China Morning Post, and Africanews.
