FBI Discovers Historic Cache of Over 150 Homemade Explosives at Virginia Farm

The FBI has recently uncovered the largest cache of homemade explosives in its history at a Virginia farm, with over 150 explosive devices, primarily pipe bombs, discovered on the property of Brad Spafford.

Spafford, who was arrested on December 17, was initially taken into custody for illegally possessing an unregistered short-barrel rifle. Authorities were alerted to his activities by a neighbor who reported that Spafford was stockpiling weapons and had previously lost three fingers due to mishandling explosive materials.

According to court documents, the explosive devices were found during a search of Spafford's 20-acre property in Isle of Wight County, where some of the more dangerous devices were located in a detached garage. Investigators also discovered additional bombs within a backpack labeled with a grenade-shaped patch and a "#"NoLivesMatter" logo, which is linked to a nihilistic, far-right ideology inciting violence.

The haul included not just pipe bombs but also HMTD, a highly unstable explosive, stored in a jar in the freezer next to food items, marked with warnings. Prosecutors are pushing for Spafford to remain in custody, arguing that he poses an extreme danger to the community, particularly due to his history of discussion around political assassinations, including using images of President Joe Biden for target practice.

Investigations report that Spafford expressed interest in fortifying his property and spoke about mounting a .50-caliber rifle for protection, which raises alarming safety concerns. Legal representation for Spafford claims he is a "hard-working family man," asserting that he has no criminal background or history of mental illness, defending his release pending trial.

With charges related to the explosives expected to follow, each could carry severe penalties, reflecting the serious nature of the findings at Spafford's residence. This alarming incident highlights a significant escalatory trend in the possession of homemade weaponry in the United States, as reported by CBS News, India Times, and Le Monde.
