Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was banned from Venice for 48 hours following a protest where she and fellow activists from Extinction Rebellion poured non-toxic dye into the Grand Canal, transforming its waters to highlight "the massive effects of climate collapse." The activists hung a banner stating "stop ecocide" from the Rialto Bridge and dressed in red veils as part of their demonstration, according to ABC News, aa, and Indiatimes.
The dye used by the activists was described as a non-toxic tracer, often utilized in environmental studies. The protest aimed to raise awareness about climate change, following Italy's resistance to fossil fuel restrictions at the recent COP30 summit in Brazil. Governor of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, condemned the action as "vandalism" that damages Venice and requires restoration efforts, according to Indiatimes and ABC News.
In addition to Thunberg, around 35 activists participated in the protest, all of whom received fines of approximately $172. Similar dyeing demonstrations took place across other Italian cities, including Milan, Bologna, and Palermo, pointing to a growing trend of disruptive climate activism. Thunberg previously faced legal issues in Israel where she was detained for participating in a humanitarian aid flotilla, according to aa, ABC News, and Indiatimes.
