French authorities have arrested four more individuals as part of the ongoing investigation into last month's spectacular jewel heist at the Louvre Museum. The suspects include two men aged 38 and 39 and two women aged 31 and 40, who are all from the Paris region, according to CBS News, Reuters, and Le Monde.
The recent arrests follow the initial detainment of four other suspects linked to the October 19 theft, which saw thieves execute the heist in less than eight minutes, fleeing with jewels valued at around $102 million. These include significant pieces like an emerald-and-diamond necklace given by Napoleon I to Empress Marie-Louise, according to South China Morning Post and Los Angeles Times.
Authorities reported that the thieves executed the heist using a moving truck, breaking into the Apollo Gallery where the French crown jewels are displayed. The gang of four made off with eight items of jewelry, yet a royal crown belonging to Empress Eugenie was dropped during the escape. Security concerns at the highly visited museum have been heightened due to this incident, with a focus on improving security measures, as noted by Al Jazeera and India Times.
