A landslide in Indonesia's Central Java on Thursday has now resulted in at least 11 confirmed deaths and 12 individuals still missing. The incident occurred in the city of Cilacap, where heavy rainfall buried several houses in Cibeunying village, according to local officials and state news agencies SCMP and Reuters.
In total, more than 700 personnel from search and rescue teams, the military, police, and volunteers are engaged in the operations, as reported by Channel News Asia and India Times. The search and rescue efforts have been complicated as the victims are buried at depths of between 3 and 8 meters (10-25 feet), which has made access difficult.
The Southeast Asian nation's wet season, which typically lasts from September to April, has exacerbated risks of such natural disasters. In prior months, similar extreme weather events have also led to fatalities; for instance, a landslide in another area of Central Java killed at least 25 individuals earlier this year, as noted by The Jakarta Post and Channel News Asia.
