  • Trump held discussions to mediate ongoing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
  • Recent clashes have reignited concerns over a US-brokered ceasefire deal.
  • Thailand demands an apology from Cambodia regarding landmine allegations.
  • Both nations have a historical dispute over their border dating back over a century.

U.S. President Donald Trump is actively mediating the escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia following allegations of renewed violence. On Friday, Trump emphasized that he had made contact with the leaders of both nations, stating, “They’re doing great. I think they’re going to be fine,” as the two countries face renewed disputes over a contested border that has sparked violence in recent days, according to South China Morning Post and The Jakarta Post.

Fresh clashes erupted as Thailand suspended a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement due to reports that Cambodia had laid new landmines, which Cambodia has denied. This situation reflects long-standing tensions that previously escalated into a five-day conflict in July, resulting in at least 48 deaths and significant displacement of civilians, according to Channel News Asia and Reuters.

Trump's involvement reportedly included threatening to impose tariffs on both nations as leverage to encourage adherence to the ceasefire terms. He remarked, “I stopped a war just today,” highlighting his administration’s role in trying to stabilize the diplomatic tensions that could have escalated into broader conflict, according to Anadolu Agency and South China Morning Post.

Nevertheless, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has insisted that Thailand will not comply with the ceasefire until Cambodia apologizes for alleged breaches of the agreement. Both leaders continue advocating for dialogue, with Cambodia's Prime Minister offering to uphold the ceasefire agreement amid the ongoing tensions, as reported by The Jakarta Post and Reuters.
