Malaysian rapper Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, has been released on police bail as investigations continue into the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh Yu-hsin. According to Attorney General Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, there is currently no evidence connecting Namewee to Hsieh's death, which occurred on October 22 in a Kuala Lumpur hotel bathtub, leading to his release on bail until November 26, 2023, while awaiting the autopsy results, according to Channel News Asia and South China Morning Post.
Namewee voluntarily surrendered to authorities on November 5, following the discovery of Hsieh's body, and has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the investigation. After being initially arrested on drug charges related to the presence of pills in the hotel room, he tested positive for several illegal substances but denies any connection to Hsieh’s death, as reported by South China Morning Post and CBS News.
The investigation into Hsieh's death has captured significant media attention in Malaysia, raising concerns among the public and authorities alike. Police chief Fadil Marsus indicated that subsequent actions depend on the results of the ongoing investigations, emphasizing that if new leads are discovered, appropriate actions will follow, according to Channel News Asia and South China Morning Post.
