  • Yoon's alleged actions are tied to his controversial martial law declaration.
  • Former officials also charged for their roles in the alleged conspiracy.
  • Yoon's administration faced considerable backlash and political fallout.

South Korea's former President Yoon Suk Yeol has been indicted on charges of abusing power and aiding an enemy, stemming from his controversial actions during his tenure, particularly related to a failed military crisis plan. Prosecutors allege that Yoon attempted to provoke military conflict with North Korea in a bid to justify his imposition of martial law last December. Evidence against Yoon includes plans for drone flights aimed at triggering a North Korean response, thereby legitimizing the martial law declaration, according to Channel News Asia and Le Monde.

The special prosecutor, Park Ji-young, stated that compelling evidence from a memo revealed Yoon and his aides conspired to escalate tensions to create a condition ripe for declaring martial law. The memo reportedly outlined strategies such as sending drones into North Korean airspace to drop propaganda, evident from North Korea's claims of incursions, although the South did not confirm this at the time, as cited by Al Jazeera and AA.

Furthermore, reports indicate Yoon's decisions led to significant political upheaval, culminating in his impeachment earlier this year. He marked a historical shift by sending armed soldiers to the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from voting against his martial law proposal, characterized by many as an attempted coup, according to Los Angeles Times and South China Morning Post.

In addition to Yoon, former defense officials, including Kim Yong-hyun and Yeo In-hyung, have been indicted for their complicity in the alleged conspiracy. Their actions are said to have jeopardized national security by increasing the risk of armed conflict with North Korea, with specific plans to target key locations in North Korea to provoke a response, reports highlight, as indicated by Le Monde and Los Angeles Times.
