A Ukrainian court in Zaporizhzhia sentenced Dmitry Kurashov, a 27-year-old Russian soldier, to life in prison for the killing of Ukrainian prisoner of war (POW) Vitalii Hodniuk. This ruling is historical, as it represents the first time Ukraine has convicted an individual for such charges since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022, according to Reuters and South China Morning Post.
The court found Kurashov guilty of deliberately shooting Hodniuk, a 41-year-old Ukrainian veteran, after the latter surrendered on January 6, 2024. The prosecution's evidence included witness testimonies, video footage, and expert reports that confirmed Kurashov's actions violated international humanitarian law, which prohibits the execution of prisoners of war. This trial is regarded as pivotal due to Ukraine's ongoing struggle with reported executions of its servicemen, according to BBC and Reuters.
