  • The US is introducing a draft resolution at the UN to establish a governance body in Gaza.
  • Key regional nations support the resolution, highlighting a collective interest in peace.
  • The resolution includes provisions for an International Stabilization Force in Gaza.
  • Negotiations at the UN Security Council are set to begin soon.
  • The resolution requires majority support for adoption without a veto from permanent members.

The United States is advancing efforts at the United Nations to establish a governance framework in Gaza, sharing a draft resolution with the 10 elected members of the UN Security Council. This resolution is linked to President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza, designed to set up a transitional governance body and an International Stabilization Force (ISF) for a two-year mandate, according to Channel News Asia.

Ambassador Michael Waltz of the US highlighted the regional backing from countries including Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during a high-level meeting focused on the resolution. This support reflects a shared commitment to fostering stability and peace in Gaza as part of a broader regional approach, reports Anadolu Agency.

The draft resolution, which promotes humanitarian efforts and includes mechanisms to disarm militant groups, was circulated to all 15 council members ahead of upcoming negotiations. A senior US official indicated that the resolution would enable the ISF to protect civilians and assist humanitarian operations in Gaza, using "all necessary measures" as needed, as stated in Reuters.

The US insists that the resolution aligns with regional interests and aims to foster collaboration on security, but it still requires broad support for adoption. Any resolution issued by the Security Council must secure at least nine votes in favor and avoid vetoes from any of the five permanent members, namely the US, Britain, France, Russia, or China. Consequently, negotiations are pivotal for determining the draft’s fate, according to Anadolu Agency and Reuters.

The resolution emphasizes a collective security approach, allowing the ISF to engage in humanitarian efforts and aid delivery while stabilizing the region. As the political landscape evolves, the resolution highlights a critical moment in addressing the Gaza conflict, supported by regional alliances, as illustrated by the collaborative efforts of the US and its regional partners, according to Channel News Asia, Anadolu Agency, and Reuters.
