Tragic collapse of medieval tower in Rome leaves one dead, rescue operations detailed

Credited from: SCMP

  • One worker tragically died after being rescued from the Torre dei Conti in Rome.
  • Rescue operations faced challenges from ongoing structural collapses during the efforts.
  • A total of three other workers were rescued with minor injuries following the incident.
  • The tower was undergoing renovation prior to the collapse, funded by the EU.

A medieval tower in Rome, the Torre dei Conti, partially collapsed during renovation work on November 3, resulting in multiple injuries and the tragic death of one worker, Octay Stroici. Despite being successfully rescued, Stroici was pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts failed at the hospital. His death marks a significant sorrow following an accident that injured several others, with officials expressing condolences to his family, according to India Times and Al Jazeera.

The collapse occurred around 11:30 AM local time, and rescue teams were promptly dispatched. Firefighters reported a "very complex" situation due to the instability of the remaining structure, which continued to give way as they attempted to reach the trapped workers. After an initial rescue, a second collapse further complicated the operations, but thanks to protective measures, the trapped individual survived the second incident, said Rome Prefect Lamberto Giannini, according to BBC and Los Angeles Times.

Officials stated that aside from Stroici, three other workers were rescued, two of whom sustained minor injuries while another was hospitalized in critical condition. The Torre dei Conti was undergoing a significant renovation funded by the European Union, following years of neglect. The structure, commissioned in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III, had been closed to the public since 2007, highlighting long-standing concerns regarding its safety and condition, reports Reuters and South China Morning Post.

The rescue operation witnessed participation from approximately 140 firefighters, employing drones and heavy machinery to mitigate the risks while attempting to safely extract the trapped workers. As details emerged about the collapses, regional officials and local authorities expressed a need for thorough investigations into the safety protocols followed during renovation work, emphasizing the urgency of ensuring the structural integrity of historical buildings, according to AA and AA.
