Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa is expected to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on November 10, in what will be the first visit by a Syrian leader to the US capital in more than 80 years, according to Los Angeles Times and Channel News Asia.
During this historic meeting, discussions will revolve around several critical topics, including the lifting of economic sanctions on Syria and vital reconstruction efforts following years of war, as stated by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani in Bahrain. The meeting represents a major diplomatic shift as al-Sharaa aims to re-establish ties with world powers that had previously shunned Syria, according to India Times and Anadolu Agency.
Reportedly, al-Sharaa is also expected to sign an agreement to join the international US-led coalition against ISIS, enhancing cooperation in the ongoing fight against terrorism. This coalition has been in place since 2014, aiming to prevent the resurgence of militant groups in the region, according to Channel News Asia, Al Jazeera, and Anadolu Agency.
The backdrop of the visit includes ongoing negotiations between Syria and Israel, which aim for a de-escalation of military tensions. Al-Sharaa’s government hopes to achieve a security agreement that would contribute to regional stability, characterized by the previous conflict's legacy and ongoing territorial disputes, as highlighted by Los Angeles Times and Al Jazeera.
