On Thursday morning, two Australian women cricketers were allegedly molested by a man while walking from their hotel to a cafe in Indore. The players, in the city for the ICC Women’s World Cup, informed their team security manager Danny Simmons about the incident as it occurred near the Radisson Blu Hotel, where they were staying. The police responded to the complaint that the team faced "inappropriate behaviour" after a motorcyclist approached them and touched one of the players inappropriately while also attempting to grab another. Following a thorough investigation, a suspect was identified and arrested for the offenses of stalking and outraging modesty according to sections 74 and 78 of the criminal code, according to Channel News Asia, Reuters, and India Times.
According to police reports, the incident was captured on CCTV, which showed the suspect following the players before attempting to molest them about 500 meters from their hotel. A distress message was sent by one player to Simmons, who then alerted local authorities. Within six hours of the incident being reported, a man identified as Akil Khan was apprehended. He is said to have had previous criminal dealings and was taken into custody after local security forces executed a strategic operation, as highlighted by police officer Rajesh Dandotiya, according to India Times and India Times.
After the incident, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) termed the situation “deeply regrettable” and expressed support for providing a safer environment for players. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia noted that there would be a review of existing safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The incident has garnered widespread attention and has raised questions regarding the safety measures in place during international sports events, pointing out that the local authorities are taking this matter seriously, according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.
