Alaska Airlines announced that it grounded all flights across the nation on Thursday due to an "IT outage affecting operations." The airline requested a temporary ground stop from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which also included its subsidiary Horizon Air, according to multiple sources including ABC News and Reuters.
The outage caused significant disruptions, leading to the cancellation of 229 flights and delays across several airports, with 82 delays reported at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport alone. Alaska Airlines confirmed it is "actively restoring operations," though details about the outage duration remain unclear, according to CBS News and Los Angeles Times.
Passengers expressed concerns over issues accessing the airline’s app and website, which were also impacted by the outage. This marks the second significant IT issue for the airline in a few months, as it previously grounded flights for about three hours in July due to similar problems, as reported by Business Insider and BBC.
The airline, which serves over 140 destinations globally, has urged travelers to check their flight statuses before coming to the airport as it works to reposition aircraft and crews following disruptions from this outage, as noted by India Times and India Times.
