  • A cargo plane crashed into a security vehicle at Hong Kong International Airport, killing two staff members.
  • The Boeing 747 freighter was on a flight from Dubai when it veered off the runway.
  • All four crew members aboard the aircraft were rescued unharmed.
  • Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, with initial reports suggesting suitable conditions at the time.
  • This incident marks one of the deadliest at the airport since its opening in 1998.

Early Monday morning, a cargo plane operated by ACT Airlines for Emirates veered off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport and crashed into a security patrol vehicle, resulting in the tragic deaths of two airport staff. The accident occurred around 3:50 AM local time as the Boeing 747 touched down after a flight from Dubai, with the aircraft partially submerged in the sea following the collision, according to South China Morning Post and ABC News.

The security vehicle was reportedly at a safe distance from the runway when the plane lost control, striking the vehicle and pushing it into the water. Rescue operations were swift, with divers recovering the two men from the submerged vehicle. One was declared dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries after being taken to North Lantau Hospital, reports Africa News and Channel News Asia.

Initial investigations indicate that weather and runway conditions were deemed suitable for landing, leading the authorities to proceed with inquiries into the crash's circumstances. Police have not ruled out a criminal investigation, especially since the aircraft made no distress call prior to the incident, as indicated by India Times and Los Angeles Times.

The aircraft involved was operating under a wet lease arrangement from ACT Airlines, which stressed the health of the crew was stable and confirmed there was no cargo on board at the time. The airport's north runway has been temporarily closed while investigations continue—other runways remained operational, reported Le Monde and Business Insider.
