In a recent briefing, US President Donald Trump expressed enthusiasm about a proposed undersea tunnel connecting Alaska and Russia, calling it "interesting" during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The idea was initially proposed by Kirill Dmitriev, a Kremlin envoy, who suggested the project could utilize Elon Musk's The Boring Company technology. Dmitriev remarked that this "peace bridge" could link Siberia and Alaska, facilitating resource exploration and cooperation between nations according to SCMP and India Times.
During the discussion, Trump inquired about Zelensky's opinion on the tunnel. Zelensky, amid ongoing conflict with Russia, responded with apprehension, stating, "I’m not happy with this," leading to a light-hearted moment in an otherwise serious context. Dmitriev, the CEO of Russia's Direct Investment Fund, highlighted that building the tunnel might symbolize unity between the countries and "unlock" possibilities for joint resource exploration, as noted by Al Jazeera and India Times.
The proposal for the tunnel, initially floated on social media by Dmitriev, suggests a 70-mile link across the Bering Strait, which could be built for approximately $8 billion and completed in less than eight years. However, experts caution that construction would face challenges due to seismic activity and extreme temperatures in the region. As Dmitriev pointed out, “The dream of a US-Russia link via the Bering Strait reflects an enduring vision,” according to SCMP, India Times, and Al Jazeera.
