Amid the ongoing government shutdown, the Trump administration has reversed layoff notices for hundreds of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) staff members who were mistakenly notified of their termination. On Friday, about 1,300 employees received layoff notifications due to an initiated reduction in force (RIF) impacting over 4,100 federal employees across various agencies, according to reports from Indiatimes, BBC, and The Hill.

Following the notification errors, approximately 700 employees were reinstated on Saturday after officials confirmed they were "never separated from the agency." The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) spokesperson Andrew Nixon stated, "The employees who received incorrect notifications were never separated from the agency and have all been notified that they are not subject to the reduction in force," as reported by BBC and The Hill.

Among those reinstated were critical team members, including staff from departments focused on infectious disease responses and health data analysis. Miscommunication in the layoff notifications stemmed from a coding error, with officials declaring it imperative that skilled personnel return to their roles given the notable rise in diseases such as measles.
