OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT by allowing users to connect with third-party apps, streamlining tasks such as creating playlists on Spotify or searching for homes on Zillow through the chatbot. This new functionality, showcased during the company's annual developer event, is designed to transform ChatGPT into a platform that facilitates various digital services without leaving the app, according to SCMP and LA Times.
Known as "talking to apps," this feature requires users to sign into these apps initially, allowing ChatGPT to access services like Expedia and Figma as well. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed excitement over this potential, stating, "We never meant to build a chatbot... We set out to build a super assistant," pointing to a significant evolution of ChatGPT over the coming months towards something akin to an operating system, as reported by The Jakarta Post and LA Times.
OpenAI's rapid growth has fueled anticipations for this feature, as the company now boasts over 800 million weekly users and projects revenue of $13 billion for this year, a substantial increase from $4 billion in 2024 according to SCMP and LA Times. However, the company is still unprofitable due to hefty operational costs, with Altman acknowledging the need for profitable operations in the future.
Moreover, OpenAI introduced a software called AgentKit, aimed at assisting developers in building AI agents capable of executing various tasks autonomously. This tool could significantly reduce development time, as demonstrably noted by Altman, who stated that tasks that once took months could now be accomplished in minutes, aligning with reports from The Jakarta Post and LA Times.
