Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg officially abdicated the throne on October 3, 2025, after serving in a largely symbolic role for 25 years. In a grand ceremony at the Grand Ducal Palace, Henri handed over the reigns to his son, Guillaume, who was set to be crowned later that day. The event was attended by members of the royal families from neighboring nations, including Belgium and the Netherlands, along with prominent political figures such as French President Emmanuel Macron and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, according to Le Monde and India Times.
Following his coronation, Guillaume will greet the public from a balcony alongside his family, including his wife, Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy, and their two young sons. The royal transition symbolizes a new era as Luxembourg’s seventh grand duke, with the formal proceedings emphasizing the grand duke's role as a political symbol within the parliamentary democracy, akin to King Charles in the UK or King Philippe in Belgium. This change is particularly notable as Luxembourg is the last remaining grand duchy in the world, according to TRT Global and South China Morning Post.
As part of the transition, commemorative changes will occur throughout the duchy, with Guillaume's photograph replacing his father's in public displays. His monogram, characterized by a pair of symmetrical golden “G” letters beneath a crown, will be adopted into the uniforms of various national services, including the army and police. The new grand duke’s educational background in France and the UK matches the established royal tradition, and he has previously worked with multinational companies prior to assuming the throne, according to all sources including India Times, Le Monde, and TRT Global.
