Zhimin Qian, also known as Yadi Zhang, has admitted to playing a crucial role in a multibillion-pound bitcoin fraud, marking what is believed to be the single largest cryptocurrency seizure globally. Appearing at Southwark Crown Court in London, the 47-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of illegally acquiring and possessing cryptocurrency worth over £5.5 billion (approximately $7.4 billion) during a seven-year investigation by the Metropolitan Police, according to SCMP and BBC.
Between 2014 and 2017, Qian orchestrated a large-scale scam in China, cheating over 128,000 victims and storing the illicit gains in bitcoin. The guilty plea follows a complex investigation that required cooperation from multiple jurisdictions, as Qian evaded arrest for five years, eventually fleeing China using false documents to enter the UK, as reported by India Times and BBC.
Qian's fraudulent activities reportedly involved luring investors by promising high returns from cryptocurrency investments, with many victims being family and friends of those directly approached. Reports indicate significant sums were raised from individuals aged 50 to 75, who were led to believe in Qian’s purported financial and technological ventures in China, highlighting the pervasive nature of such scams, according to India Times and SCMP.
As part of the criminal operation, Qian's accomplice, Jian Wen, was previously sentenced to over six years in prison. Wen helped move and launder the stolen cryptocurrency benefits, accumulating properties with proceeds from the scam. Qian's case reveals the accessibility of cryptocurrencies for organized crime, according to the Metropolitan Police, as highlighted by India Times and BBC.
Currently, Qian remains in custody as she awaits sentencing, which has yet to be scheduled. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working diligently to prevent the distribution of the stolen funds, emphasizing the importance of maintaining financial integrity in an increasingly digital economy, reports SCMP and India Times.
