The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, the world’s tallest bridge, officially opened to traffic in Guizhou Province, China, on Sunday. With a height of 625 meters above the Beipan River, the bridge drastically reduces connectivity time across the canyon, slashing it from two hours to just two minutes, according to aa and Channel News Asia.
Construction of the bridge took over three years and culminated in a structure 2,890 meters long, featuring a main span of 1,420 meters, making it the world's longest-span steel truss girder suspension bridge in mountainous terrain. This bridge surpasses the previous record-holder, the 565-meter-high Beipanjiang Bridge also located in Guizhou, according to India Times and Africanews.
Authorities have emphasized that the opening of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge not only enhances regional transportation but also injects vital economic and social benefits into the local area. Zhang Yin, the head of Guizhou's provincial transport department, noted the bridge significantly improves connectivity and the potential for local development, as reported by Channel News Asia and aa.
With advanced construction techniques and the application of new technologies, the project team achieved remarkable precision in high-altitude construction. The bridge includes features such as recreational areas with elevators and cafés offering stunning views, which enhance its appeal as both a transportation corridor and a tourist attraction, according to Africanews and India Times.
