Marc Marquez of the Ducati Lenovo Team achieved his seventh MotoGP world championship title at the Japanese Grand Prix, contested at the Motegi Circuit. He finished second behind his teammate Francesco Bagnaia, securing the championship with five races still to go in the season, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
Marquez needed to outperform his brother, Alex Marquez, who was a title contender, by three points. He finished the race with a 201-point lead over Alex, who placed sixth, thus allowing Marc to secure the championship. Marquez crossed the finish line feeling overwhelmed, stating, "It’s impossible even to speak... it was indeed difficult; it was super difficult, but now I’m at peace with myself," according to AA and Reuters.
The race saw Honda's Joan Mir take third place. Marquez's emotional journey back to the top included over 100 crashes and multiple surgeries over a six-year period, culminating in this victory. He expressed regret for returning too early from surgery but was ultimately content with his comeback, finishing second to Bagnaia by 4.196 seconds, according to Al Jazeera and AA.
With this championship, Marquez joins motorcycle legend Valentino Rossi, both having secured seven titles in their careers. The next event in the MotoGP calendar is the Indonesia Grand Prix on October 5, through which Marquez aims to build on his remarkable season, according to Al Jazeera and AA.
