The United Nations has reinstated sanctions against Iran amid escalating tensions regarding its nuclear program. This decision, which took effect at midnight GMT, follows failed diplomatic negotiations among the UK, France, and Germany, which accused Iran of violating its obligations under a 2015 nuclear deal aimed at preventing the country from developing nuclear weapons. In a direct response, Iranian officials have condemned the sanctions as "unjustifiable" and warned of severe consequences for the countries involved, according to Channel News Asia, TRT Global, and BBC.
The renewed sanctions include an arms embargo, prohibitions against uranium enrichment, and other severe restrictions linked to Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile activities. Additionally, financial penalties such as asset freezes and travel bans have been reinstated, according to multiple sources, including The Jakarta Post and India Times.
The foreign ministers of the E3 nations (UK, France, and Germany) stated that the reimposition of sanctions was an unavoidable response to Iran’s "continued nuclear escalation" and lack of cooperation with nuclear oversight authorities. They emphasized that this action does not signify the end of diplomatic dialogue and urged Iran to comply with its legal obligations. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, however, labeled the sanctions as "unfair, unjust, and illegal," further complicating the diplomatic landscape, as reported by Middle East Eye and Dawn.
Simultaneously, Russia and China attempted to block the sanctions by proposing a delay, arguing that such measures could escalate tensions in the Middle East. However, their efforts were unsuccessful, leading to the swift enactment of the renewed sanctions. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the sanctions were "unlawful and cannot be implemented," reflecting the ongoing geopolitical disputes in the region, according to Le Monde and Anadolu Agency.
