Trump Demands Investigation into ‘Triple Sabotage’ Incident During UN Visit

  • Trump alleges 'triple sabotage' following technical failures during his UN visit.
  • Escalator stop, malfunctioning teleprompter, and audio issues marred his speech.
  • UN cites a videographer’s actions as the likely cause of the escalator stoppage.
  • The White House raises suspicions of intentional malfeasance at the UN.
  • Trump has called for investigations by both the UN and Secret Service.

U.S. President Donald Trump has demanded an investigation over what he describes as "triple sabotage" during his recent appearance at the United Nations after experiencing an escalator malfunction, a teleprompter failure, and issues with the sound system. During his speech, Trump remarked, "A REAL DISGRACE took place at the United Nations yesterday — Not one, not two, but three very sinister events!" according to Washington Post.

The escalator incident occurred shortly after Trump and First Lady Melania Trump stepped onto the escalator, which abruptly stopped, leaving the couple to climb the rest of the way on foot. Video footage showed them walking up while holding onto the handrails, which Trump later described as an accident waiting to happen. "It’s amazing that Melania and I didn’t fall forward onto the sharp edges... It was only that we were each holding the handrail tightly or, it would have been a disaster," Trump posted on Truth Social, according to HuffPost.

The United Nations has stated that the stoppage was likely caused by a U.S. videographer who, while attempting to capture footage, inadvertently triggered the escalator's built-in safety mechanism. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric clarified that "a subsequent investigation, including a readout of the machine's central processing unit, indicated that the escalator stopped after a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was triggered," according to CBS News.

In addition to the escalator issue, Trump faced interruptions while speaking, notably a malfunctioning teleprompter which he joked about, saying, "I can only say that whoever's operating this teleprompter is in big trouble." Further complicating the delivery, he claimed that the sound system was not functioning properly for attendees not using interpreter earpieces, as detailed by ABC News.

White House officials have raised suspicions regarding potential foul play, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt asserting on social media that if a UN staff member intentionally caused the escalator to stop, they ought to be held accountable. "If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately," she posted on X, referencing a report from The Times that noted UN staff had joked about such a possibility.

In light of these events, Trump has formally requested an inquiry from the UN Secretary-General António Guterres and insisted that all security footage from the incident be preserved, asserting that the Secret Service is looking into the matter as well, as reported by NPR.
