Sinclair Broadcast Group has announced it will preempt "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" across its ABC affiliate stations starting Tuesday, replacing it with news programming. The network emphasized that discussions regarding Kimmel's return are still ongoing with ABC, following the comedian's suspension last week by Disney due to controversial remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which he made just prior to the suspension, according to Business Insider and The Hill.
Alongside Sinclair, Nexstar Media has also declared it will not resume airing "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on its ABC affiliates, which include 32 stations across the country. They echoed Sinclair’s intent to replace Kimmel’s show with alternative programming, stressing their commitment to monitor its content upon return to the network, as outlined by Reuters and India Times.
The suspension and subsequent decisions by both Sinclair and Nexstar come amidst increasing pressure from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), particularly from Chair Brendan Carr, who remarked that local broadcasters must be held accountable for airing programs contrary to community values. This sentiment has been met with a mix of support and backlash from various political figures and media executives, highlighting the contentious nature of Kimmel's suspension and its implications for local broadcasting, according to The Hill and Reuters.
