Brazil's chief prosecutor has charged federal lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro with coercion, linked to the case involving his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was recently convicted for plotting a coup. The official statement from the prosecutor general's office alleges that the younger Bolsonaro has "repeatedly sought to subordinate the interests of Brazil and the entire society to his own personal and family agenda," as reported by Reuters and Al Jazeera.
Further complicating the case, Eduardo Bolsonaro relocated to the United States earlier this year, purportedly to garner support from then-President Donald Trump against the legal actions targeting his father. He has also claimed credit for influencing the tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Brazilian goods. Notably, he linked the coercion charge to recent sanctions against the wife of a Supreme Court Justice involved in his father's trial, calling the prosecutor's office staff "Moraes's lackeys," according to BBC and Reuters.
Eduardo Bolsonaro has publicly described the accusations as "bogus," asserting that he learned of the charges through media outlets. He emphasized that the timing of the announcement reflects ongoing political persecution against him, echoing sentiments expressed by his father regarding a "witch hunt" against them. As reported by Al Jazeera and BBC, legal representatives are also considering compensation claims resulting from alleged criminal actions.
