Syria is set to hold its first parliamentary elections under the new administration on October 5, following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad last December. This election marks a significant shift in the country after over five decades of dictatorship and a decade of civil strife, as noted by state media India Times and TRT Global.
According to the electoral commission, voting will occur across all districts for a new People's Assembly comprised of 210 members. Of these, 140 will be elected, while the remaining 70 will be appointed directly by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, as reported by Al Jazeera and AA.
The elections are anticipated to establish a groundwork for a more democratic process and legislative reforms aimed at overhauling the state's economic policies and reshaping foreign policy alliances. The interim government seeks to gain legitimacy and rebuild state institutions as it navigates regional diplomatic efforts, according to India Times, TRT Global, and Al Jazeera.
