Iran to Suspend IAEA Cooperation Following UN Sanctions Vote

  • Iran's Supreme National Security Council to suspend cooperation with IAEA following UN sanctions vote.
  • UK, France, and Germany accused of political bias in reviving sanctions against Iran.
  • The UN Security Council reimposed economic sanctions on Iran, effective September 28.
  • Iran claims its nuclear program is peaceful amid allegations of breaching JCPOA commitments.
  • Diplomatic efforts may continue during the UN General Assembly.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) announced on Saturday that it will suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following the UN Security Council's vote to reimpose sanctions on Tehran. The SNSC described actions taken by Britain, France, and Germany as “ill-considered," asserting that their decision undermines months of engagement aimed at restoring compliance with international regulations, according to dawn and aljazeera.

The UN Security Council voted on September 19 to reinstate deep economic sanctions against Iran, stating concerns over Tehran's nuclear program. The European trio (E3) initiated a 30-day process which has now led to the potential reactivation of sanctions unless a diplomatic solution is found. The Security Council's decision is seen by Iranian officials as politically biased, further escalating tensions in an already volatile environment, according to aljazeera and channelnewsasia.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed that Tehran had previously proposed “fair and balanced” solutions during discussions with European powers to avoid reimposition of sanctions. However, the E3 has maintained that Iran needs to comply with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) requirements, which Iran insists it has followed, according to dawn, lemonde, and scmp.

As the situation evolves, President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that Iran will “overcome obstacles” arising from the reinstated sanctions and emphasized a commitment to continue a path of negotiation. Despite recent setbacks in talks, he indicated that Iran’s determination would guide its actions, reflecting a broader stance against external pressure linked to its nuclear ambitions. These developments unfold amidst heightened rhetoric surrounding Iran’s nuclear intentions, which the country maintains are peaceful, according to trtglobal, lemonde, and aa.
