  • Global Sumud Flotilla sets sail from Tunisia with 40+ vessels carrying aid and activists.
  • Participants include prominent figures like Greta Thunberg and parliamentarians from various nations.
  • Flotilla aims to challenge Israel's blockade of Gaza and deliver essential humanitarian supplies.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, a large-scale international convoy of boats, has begun its journey from Tunisia to Gaza, aiming to challenge Israel’s blockade and deliver humanitarian aid. Departing from Bizerte Port, the flotilla comprises over 40 vessels carrying between 500 and 700 activists, including artists and politicians from more than 40 countries, seeking to provide necessary assistance to Palestinians suffering under conditions of famine caused by the blockade, according to Al Jazeera and Anadolu Agency.

Prominent activists aboard include Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and former Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, both expressing determination to bring attention to the plight of Gaza's people. Thunberg stated, "When our governments are failing to step up... we have no choice but to take matters into our own hands," highlighting the mission's dual focus on delivering aid and raising awareness, according to Le Monde and Africa News.

The flotilla's launch faced various delays, including logistical challenges and drone attacks on its vessels while docked, which Tunisian authorities described as “premeditated aggression.” Organizers reported that these incidents have not deterred the fleet, which aims to deliver crucial supplies like food and medicine to Gaza, according to Anadolu Agency and Middle East Eye.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with reports indicating more than 64,800 Palestinians have died due to ongoing military actions since October 2023. The Global Sumud Flotilla's mission represents a significant collective effort to highlight these humanitarian crises and confront the ongoing Israeli blockade, as stressed by spokespersons from the flotilla, according to Anadolu Agency and Al Jazeera.
