  • Basel Adra's West Bank home was raided by Israeli soldiers searching for him.
  • Adra's family experienced violence from settlers before the raid occurred.
  • His documentary "No Other Land" highlights the plight of Palestinians in Masafer Yatta.
  • The raid follows a pattern of increased hostility towards Adra since winning an Oscar.

Oscar-winning director Basel Adra reported that Israeli soldiers raided his home in the West Bank, seeking information about his whereabouts and searching his wife’s phone. This incident occurred shortly after Israeli settlers attacked his village, injuring two of his brothers and a cousin, which led Adra to accompany them to the hospital. Upon hearing about the raid while in the hospital, Adra discovered that soldiers had stormed his home, questioned his wife, and briefly detained one of his uncles. Currently, he is unable to return home due to military blockades around the village, fearing for his safety, according to CBS News and Channel News Asia.

Describing the situation as "horrific," Adra reflected on the systematic violence his family and community face, emphasizing, “Even if you are just filming the settlers, the army comes and chases you, searches your house. The whole system is built to attack us, to terrify us, to make us very scared.” This aligns with his prior statements where he noted that following the success of their documentary "No Other Land," both he and his co-director Hamdan Ballal have faced intensified targeting. The documentary, which was awarded an Oscar, highlights the struggles of residents in Masafer Yatta against military evictions, according to Middle East Eye and Los Angeles Times.

During the raid, soldiers sought answers concerning Adra's location as his family members experienced the violence of settlers. Videos documented by his relatives showcased the aggressive actions of settlers, underscoring the dangerous conditions for Palestinians. This attack is part of a disconcerting trend of settler violence in the West Bank, particularly in areas like Masafer Yatta, which Israel has designated for military training, thereby threatening the livelihood of local residents, according to CBS News, Middle East Eye, and Los Angeles Times.
