  • North Korea condemns joint military drills by the US, South Korea, and Japan.
  • Kim Yo Jong warns of "negative consequences" for allies' military actions.
  • The trilateral exercise, called "Freedom Edge," aims to enhance defensive capabilities.

Korean leader Kim Jong-un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, has warned that the joint military exercises conducted by the United States, South Korea, and Japan could lead to "negative consequences" for the allies. These exercises, labeled "Freedom Edge," are set to begin on September 15 and are aimed at enhancing defense capabilities against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, according to reports from Reuters and Channel News Asia.

The North Korean administration views these drills as a "reckless show of strength," claiming that they represent military threats that can lead to unintended confrontations. Kim Yo Jong stated, "The reckless display of power displayed by the US, Japan, and South Korea will undoubtedly bring about negative consequences for themselves," as reported by Al Jazeera and India Times.

The "Freedom Edge" exercise, taking place in international waters near South Korea's Jeju Island, involves advanced training in aerial, naval, and cyber capabilities. Officials from the US Indo-Pacific Command have described this as the most advanced trilateral military exercise to date, aimed at deterring North Korean provocations, as stated in reports from TRT Global and Newsweek.

North Korea has historically condemned such trilateral drills, perceiving them as rehearsals for invasion. In parallel to "Freedom Edge," the US and South Korea are also conducting the "Iron Mace" tabletop exercises focusing on integrating US nuclear capabilities with South Korean forces, according to TRT Global and South China Morning Post.

Kim Yo Jong has emphasized that North Korea will respond "more clearly and strongly" should the US and its allies continue what she terms "hostile actions," which she claims exacerbate tensions in the region, as reiterated by Al Jazeera and TRT Global.
