  • An arrest warrant is sought for Israeli President Isaac Herzog during his UK visit.
  • Mass protests in London accuse Herzog of complicity in war crimes against Palestinians.
  • Friends of Al-Aqsa is leading legal efforts to hold Herzog accountable for his actions.

An arrest warrant has been requested for Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who is scheduled to arrive in London for a three-day visit. The call for his arrest is driven by accusations against him regarding alleged war crimes, primarily due to his support for military operations in Gaza and comments made following the Hamas attack on Israel. Friends of Al-Aqsa (FOA), a pro-Palestinian group, has initiated legal action, asserting that Herzog must be held accountable for "aiding, abetting, or procuring direct and indiscriminate attacks on civilians" in Gaza, according to Middle East Eye and Al Jazeera.

On Tuesday, thousands gathered outside the Prime Minister's Office in London, participating in an "emergency protest" to demand Herzog's arrest upon his arrival. Protesters, waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans against the British government, criticized Prime Minister Keir Starmer for allowing Herzog to visit amidst ongoing violence in Gaza. The demonstration reflected broader public discontent towards the UK government's stance on Israeli actions, with many British legislators expressing their opposition to the visit, according to TRT Global and Al Jazeera.

The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) has formally requested that Scotland Yard investigate Herzog for "criminal liability for alleged war crimes." This action is supported by the FOA, which stresses the need for legal consequences for officials involved in attacks on civilians. Ismail Patel, chair of FOA, lamented that the UK has a chance to uphold international law and accountability by addressing Herzog's actions. “Every official, no matter how senior, must be held accountable for attacks on civilians,” Patel stated, according to Middle East Eye and Al Jazeera.

As Herzog's visit progresses, further protests are anticipated, particularly during his speech at the Chatham House think tank. Activists plan to disrupt the event with noise, reflecting ongoing public outrage over perceived complicity in human rights violations against Palestinians. British public opinion appears to resonate with these views, as a recent YouGov poll indicated that over half of the public believes Israel's actions are unjustified, according to TRT Global and Middle East Eye.
