On Tuesday morning, the cargo ship Mississippi experienced a significant incident at the Port of Long Beach, resulting in over 60 shipping containers tumbling into the water. U.S. Coast Guard officials reported that the incident occurred around 8:44 a.m., leading to temporary halting of cargo operations as responders worked at the site, according to ABC News and Los Angeles Times.
The port's spokesperson, Art Marroquin, indicated that approximately 67 containers fell overboard, with initial assessments revealing that no injuries occurred. Consequently, cargo operations at Pier G were suspended while investigations into the incident are underway, according to India Times and ABC News.
The Mississippi, a Portuguese-flagged cargo vessel, had recently arrived in Long Beach after departing from Yantian port in Shenzhen, China, around August 26. This incident has sparked concerns at one of the busiest seaports in the U.S., which handles a considerable volume of cargo, as it disrupts operations and poses potential environmental risks, as reported by Los Angeles Times and India Times.
