A surfer died on Saturday after being mauled by a suspected "large shark" while surfing off Long Reef Beach in Sydney, according to police reports. The incident, which occurred shortly after 10 a.m. local time, resulted in the immediate closure of several nearby beaches, including those between Manly and Narrabeen, pending further examination of the situation, according to Channel News Asia, BBC, and ABC News.
The 57-year-old victim, an experienced surfer, lost "a number of limbs" during the attack and was pulled from the water by fellow surfers. Police Superintendent John Duncan stated that attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, as he had lost significant blood and sustained "catastrophic injuries." Witness reports indicate that the incident occurred approximately 100 meters from the shore while he was surfing with friends, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters.
This incident marks the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since the death of a British diving instructor in February 2022, which had been the first since 1963. Normally, Australia sees a low incidence of fatal shark attacks; however, this incident, along with others reported in various states this year, has raised concerns. Surf safety experts have begun investigating the species of shark involved by examining recovered parts of the victim's surfboard, according to CBS News and ABC News.
