U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the 2026 Group of 20 summit will be held at his Trump National Doral resort in Miami. This marks the first time in nearly two decades that the U.S. will host the summit, which is set for December 14-15, 2026. Trump described Doral as the "best location," emphasizing its proximity to the airport and appealing surroundings, stating, "It's beautiful, a beautiful everything," according to CBS News and TRT Global.
Trump's decision comes despite previous backlash when he attempted to host a G7 summit at the same venue during his first term, which he abandoned due to ethical concerns. He assured that the upcoming G20 summit would be organized without profit motives, insisting, "We will not make any money on it," as reported by India Times and Le Monde.
The summit will accommodate separate facilities for each country to provide enhanced logistics and an attractive venue for international leaders. Trump noted that the resort is ideal given that "most hotel rooms in Miami are normally fully booked in December," which will assist in hosting delegations effectively, according to South China Morning Post and Newsweek.
Additionally, Trump confirmed he will not attend this year's G20 summit in South Africa, sending Vice President JD Vance in his place due to tensions with South African leaders. He expressed optimism about potential participation from leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating, "I would love them to, if they want to," which highlights the ongoing diplomatic dynamics within the G20, according to India Times and Le Monde.
