A 39-year-old man was arrested on Monday after driving his car through the gates of the Russian consulate in Sydney, according to Reuters. The New South Wales Police received reports of an "unauthorised vehicle" parked in the consulate's driveway around 8 a.m., prompting immediate police response.
Upon attempting to speak with the driver, he accelerated his vehicle and crashed into the consulate's gates, resulting in injuries to two officers, one of whom is a 24-year-old constable who sustained a hand injury, reports India Times and BBC.
Television footage captured the scene, showing a white car with smashed windows abandoned next to a Russian flag on the lawn, as described by Al Jazeera. Eyewitness accounts indicate the police had drawn their firearms during the incident but arrested the man without struggle.
Tim Enright, a witness who observed the crash from a nearby rooftop, stated that police sirens and helicopters were present shortly after the incident, indicating the seriousness of the breach, according to South China Morning Post and Africanews.
