A tour bus carrying 54 passengers rolled over on a major highway in New York, killing five individuals and injuring many others as it returned from a trip to Niagara Falls. The bus was involved in the crash near Pembroke, approximately 40 kilometers east of Buffalo, according to the New York State Police information. An official stated, "the operator became distracted, lost control, over-corrected," resulting in the bus flipping into a ditch on the side of the road, as reported by CBS News and Reuters.
The deceased victims have been identified as Shankar Kumar Jha from India, along with four others from China and New Jersey. The passengers represented a mix of nationalities, which included many of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino descent. Efforts for rescue were extensive, involving multiple ambulances and helicopters to transport the injured to various hospitals, as stated by South China Morning Post and Reuters.
Doctor’s reports indicated that the injuries ranged from head trauma to broken bones, with several passengers needing immediate medical attention. Notably, many on the bus were not wearing seat belts, which contributed to the severity of the injuries sustained during the rollover incident. "Most people I'm assuming on the bus did not have a seat belt on, that is the reason why we have so many ejected people on this bus," said Trooper James O'Callaghan, according to BBC and HuffPost.
Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences and stated her office was coordinating closely with local authorities and service agencies to address the tragedy. The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team to further investigate, with initial findings ruling out mechanical failure and driver impairment as causes of the crash, acknowledged by NPR and Dawn.
