  • French man Raphael Graven, 46, dies during a livestream showing him being mistreated.
  • Authorities have launched an investigation and ordered an autopsy.
  • Government officials call for accountability from streaming platforms like Kick.

French authorities have initiated an investigation into the death of 46-year-old Raphael Graven, known online as "Jean Pormanove." He died during a livestream on the platform Kick, where he often endured humiliation and violence broadcasted live, according to CBS News and Reuters.

On Monday, Graven's death occurred in the village of Contes, located north of Nice, amid performances where viewers frequently witnessed him being mistreated. Clara Chappaz, junior minister for AI and digital technology, labeled Graven's death as "absolutely horrific," noting his history of public humiliation on the Kick platform, as reported by HuffPost and Reuters.

Authorities have already ordered an autopsy and initiated judicial proceedings to uncover the circumstances surrounding Graven's death. Chappaz emphasized the platform's responsibility for the content it disseminates, stating that "the responsibility of online platforms for dissemination of illegal content is not optional: it is the law," according to HuffPost and CBS News.

Kick Francais has stated that they would cooperate with ongoing investigations and are reviewing their French content policies. Following Graven's death, all co-streamers involved in the livestream have been banned pending the inquiry, as noted by Reuters and HuffPost.

Media reports show Graven enduring various forms of violence during his streams, including being doused with paint and oil while also being subjected to physical assaults. There remains uncertainty over whether the violence was staged or genuine; a lawyer for one of the co-streamers claimed that such scenes were scripted, yet this assertion has not clarified the nature of Graven's participation, according to CBS News and Reuters.
