  • A 42-year-old Peruvian woman was arrested in Bali for smuggling cocaine and ecstasy.
  • Authorities discovered 1.4 kg of cocaine and dozens of ecstasy pills hidden in her body.
  • The woman faces possible death penalty if convicted under Indonesia's strict drug laws.

A 42-year-old Peruvian woman has been arrested in Bali after allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine and ecstasy into the popular tourist destination using a sex toy and concealing drugs in her underwear. Customs officials became suspicious of the woman's behavior upon her arrival at Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport from Qatar on August 12, leading to a search that revealed hidden narcotics, according to SCMP, BBC, CBS News, and The Jakarta Post.

Authorities allegedly found approximately 1.4 kilograms (3.1 pounds) of cocaine sealed in six plastic packages wrapped in duct tape inside her underwear, as well as Ecstasy pills concealed within the sex toy that was inserted into her body. The total value of the drugs is estimated at around $70,000, as reported by SCMP, BBC, and CBS News.

The suspect, identified only by her initials N.S., claimed she was hired by a man she met on the dark web in April, who promised to pay her $20,000 for transporting the narcotics to Bali. Following her arrest, she has been charged under Indonesia's strict anti-drug laws, which carry the potential for the death penalty for traffickers, according to SCMP, BBC, CBS News, and The Jakarta Post.

This case follows a pattern of strict enforcement against drug smuggling in Indonesia, where the government has historically imposed severe penalties, including capital punishment. Notably, the country last executed drug traffickers in 2016, intensifying the global spotlight on its harsh drug laws, according to CBS News and The Jakarta Post.
