North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced an urgent need to "rapidly expand" the country's nuclear arsenal, responding strongly to ongoing US-South Korea military exercises. Kim labeled these drills, particularly the Ulchi Freedom Shield, as "an obvious expression of their will to provoke war," asserting that the "security environment around the DPRK is getting more serious day by day," according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.
During a visit to the Choe Hyon destroyer, Kim criticized the joint military exercises as provocative and indicative of US-South Korea's intentions to escalate hostility toward North Korea. He stated, "The prevailing situation requires us to make a radical and swift change in the existing military theory and practice and rapid expansion of nuclearization," SCMP reported. Kim's remarks come at a time when tensions on the Korean Peninsula are notably high.
The Ulchi Freedom Shield drills, slated to run for eleven days, are designed as a defensive measure but have been denounced by North Korea as preparations for invasion. Approximately 21,000 troops, including 18,000 South Koreans, are mobilized for this exercise, as reported by Al Jazeera and Newsweek.
In parallel, Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, dismissed South Korea's overtures for improved relations and labeled them a “deceptive appeasement offensive,” insisting that joint military activities undermine any chance of dialogue AA. The ongoing military actions and Kim's stark rhetoric indicate a firm rejection of diplomatic engagement from the North.
As the situation develops, experts are increasingly skeptical about the prospect of North Korea engaging in dialogue or reducing its nuclear ambitions, especially in the wake of these escalated military exercises by its adversaries Le Monde and SCMP.
