In Nigeria's Sokoto State, more than 40 people are missing after a boat accident that occurred while they were en route to Goronyo market. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that about 10 individuals were rescued following the capsizing on Sunday, and search and rescue operations are ongoing, with local authorities involved in efforts to locate the missing individuals, according to Reuters and TRT World.
The boat was reportedly overcrowded, transporting over 50 passengers along with motorcycles when it capsized. Recurring issues like vessel overloading and poor maintenance are prevalent in the region, contributing factors to frequent boating incidents during Nigeria's rainy season, according to Al Jazeera and BBC.
Authorities are intensifying search efforts, although strong water currents have hindered operations. NEMA’s director, Zubaidar Umar, noted that "over 40 other passengers are still missing," highlighting the tragic nature of this incident, which mirrors previous disasters in the area, according to Africanews and Reuters.
