A group of masked thieves broke into a toy store in La Puente, California, stealing $30,000 worth of Labubu dolls, ignoring cash and electronics. The incident occurred around 1:30 AM Wednesday, and the store owner, Joanna Avendano, expressed her dismay, stating, “We worked so hard to get to this point, and for them to just come in and... take it all away, it’s really bad,” according to India Times.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the burglary took place early Wednesday morning. Initially estimated theft amounts varied, but later reviews indicated that the total stolen could be up to $25,000 to $30,000, with the shop suffering significant losses as it had just opened two months prior, according to SCMP and HuffPost.
Notably, Labubu dolls are a popular collectible designed by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung and have become a viral sensation among collectors. Their market value has skyrocketed, with some limited editions fetching thousands, leading to criminal interest in recent thefts, according to India Times and SCMP.
The store, One Stop Sales, posted on their social media about the theft, urging the public to help in identifying the culprits as they work with the authorities. A stolen Toyota Tacoma, used by the thieves, was later recovered, though the investigation is ongoing, according to HuffPost and India Times.
