Türkiye has officially started supplying natural gas from Azerbaijan to Syria, with the first shipments announced by Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar during the inauguration of the Türkiye-Syria natural gas pipeline. According to Bayraktar, this initiative aims to support the restoration of Syria's energy infrastructure, which has suffered due to years of civil conflict. The pipeline from Kilis to Aleppo is expected to facilitate deliveries of up to 2 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, generating electricity for approximately 5 million households, as reported by TRT Global, IndiaTimes, and Dawn.
At the ceremony held in Kilis, Bayraktar emphasized that this gas supply will play a crucial role in restoring energy production in Syria, notably activating a power plant capable of generating around 1,200 megawatts. The gas will be used to enable electricity generation, mitigating severe power cuts that can extend beyond 20 hours daily. This development is seen as an essential step towards normalizing the country and addressing the energy crisis faced by millions in conflict-affected areas, according to IndiaTimes and Dawn.
The collaboration between Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Syria reflects ongoing efforts to revitalize the war-torn nation's infrastructure, particularly its energy sector. The gas from Azerbaijan will be transported via Turkish territory to enable the operation of power plants in key regions, such as Aleppo and Homs. Turkish officials highlighted that this project would provide a significant boost to Syria’s energy needs by enhancing electricity supply and allowing for more stable power generation in affected areas, as noted by TRT Global, IndiaTimes, and Dawn.
