  • YouTube is deploying AI technology to identify users under 18 in the US.
  • The system evaluates user behavior to tailor protections and content.
  • Users can verify their age through ID if incorrectly classified.
  • This initiative builds on YouTube Kids and supervised accounts.
  • The rollout will start with a small group of US users over the coming weeks.

YouTube announced on Tuesday that it is set to implement a new age-estimation technology powered by artificial intelligence, aimed at identifying users under 18 in the US. This initiative aims to enhance teen safety by limiting exposure to potentially harmful content and disabling personalized advertising for younger audiences. The technology will analyze users' behaviors, such as video categories watched and account longevity, rather than relying solely on the stated birth date, according to CBS News.

The AI technology will automatically apply age-appropriate protections once a teen user is identified, including the activation of digital well-being tools and limitations on repetitive content views. If a user's age is incorrectly classified, they will have the opportunity to verify their age through means such as a credit card or government ID. This system builds on previous initiatives like YouTube Kids and supervised accounts, as noted by AA and India Times.

YouTube plans to roll out this machine learning-based technology over the coming weeks, starting with a limited group of users in the US. The company expressed its commitment to maintaining teen privacy while enhancing safety measures, stating, "We’re proud to again be at the forefront of introducing technology that allows us to deliver safety protections," according to AA and India Times.

Previously announced in February, the system has reportedly been successful in other markets, suggesting a well-thought-out implementation strategy. YouTube will continuously monitor the process and evaluate user experience as it expands the rollout, emphasizing collaboration with content creators during this phase, according to CBS News, AA, and India Times.
